This is a classic inflationary/deflationary process: energy prices rise, driving the Consumer Price Index higher, but the sustained hits to consumer discretionary incomes and the sustained drains on overall incomes within the advanced nations have deflationary effects that could, over the medium term, more than offset the short-term CPI boosts. But both the inflationary and deflationary effects are largely negative for the oil-importing advanced industrial nations.

Pretty interesting article. Note the discussion about hedge funds - how they may, conceivably, shake up the "Intelligent Design" system.
