You will always find HP playing catch up. It's their style. It's rare that the company will take a bold risk on an uncertain market. It's a company largely led by engineers rather than businessmen. So the game plan is usually to wait for a market to appear and then try to finesse a product.

The few occassions when HP has tried to create a new market have largely been flops. Printers are one big exception.

As for the scanner, I don't even rate much of a discount anymore thanks to you guys who want it cheap. Used to get 25-33% but no more. They don't even like to spend time selling refurb stuff except when it gets in the way.
