Long term disappointing Purchasing Next was a poor decision by Apple. The BeOS looked promising and they departed because of price. This agains shows the poor management at both Apple and BeOS. Apple needs BeOS and BeOS needs Apple. It's that simple. This decision has doomed both companies and their prospects (more Apple's though). I see the recent decision more political than technical. Not a good sign.
