Tom; I appreciate your points of view because it keeps things in perspective. Also makes for great banter...

Very interesting about the arb situation that will likely develop day of IPO. However, I am not clear that 11/30/98 is a concrete date for UBID, in spite of estimates given in newsletters. I recall reading that it was being offered "sometime the week after Thanksgiving"....

I believe the longer the wait before the IPO, the greater the IPO runnup.

Although shorting opportunities will certainly present themselves at some point after the IPO, it pays to recall that the traders who profited the most from Ebay were not those that shorted Ebay and took advantage of the price drop after the IPO, but instead those longs that had the guts to hold onto their shares...

Reminds me of Marty Zweigisms:

"Don't fight the tape"

"The trend is your friend"

"Never pick a top; Instead let the market [stock, sector] prove it to you"

Now, I would submit, the internet [especially e-commerce] trend is up and no top is in sight...yet.
