>> Anyway, so Bush left his successor with a mess. So did LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush Sr., and Clinton.
Doesn't it say more about the overall direction of the country than it does about a president?
I have to say, out of all those presidents, I found GWB's presidency to be the most principled and competent -- with the possible exception of Reagan. About 10% of the country sees it the way I do, I suspect.
The BIGGEST messes we have facing us today are Medicare and Social Security. There are two workable ways out -- canceling the programs, or privatization. Well, and the alternative, which is to do nothing as these programs collapse. But the Left will not consider privatization, and when GWB tried to privatize a tiny portion of SS, the Left demagogued the issue to the point even Republicans couldn't consider it.
While LBJ's civil rights agenda was the right thing to do, LBJ and FDR programs have resulted in this country being brought to its knees. I think FDR would be very disappointed. I have seen no evidence to suggest LBJ even gave it any thought. |
