New Jersey is far from being one big city. The portion directly adjacent to New York City is very urbanized and industrialized. That's what most people think New Jersey is like. However, there are still some pretty large rural areas of the state. The Pine Barrens in Southern New Jersey is one of the least populated areas in the Northeast. Most of New Jersey is actually suburbs of New York and Philadelphia. You'd be surprised how nice some parts of New Jersey actually are. Richard Nixon chose to live out his last days in a wealthy New Jersey suburb.
