Inca Computer of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Buys Micon to Customize Laptops
Aug. 5 (Detroit Free Press/KRTBN)--Inca Computer Corp. has bought Micon Computers to assemble custom-built laptop computers.
Bloomfield Hills-based Inca is owned by Waad Nadhir, who brought CarChoice used-car superstores to Detroit. He now plans to do the same for personal computers.
"We've not only acquired a line of laptop computers to add to our desktop product mix," Nadhir said Monday, "but also inherited experienced technical and sales personnel and an operations facility to accommodate our future growth."
Inca will take over the Micon laptop plant in Livonia and expand it from 12 to 60 employees. Nadhir said a second assembly plant will be opened next year in either Memphis, Tenn., or Louisville, Ky. Federal Express operates its main cargo hub out of Memphis and United Parcel Service out of Louisville.
Inca stores eventually will be built in Birmingham, Northville, Dearborn, Shelby Township and Troy, Nadhir said. Inca plans to open 300 stores in five years.
The 12,000- to 15,000-square-foot stores will be designed for businesses seeking comprehensive services, as well as for the experienced individual computer buyer looking for a built-to-order computer with advanced capabilities.
Inca will try to distance itself from mail-order rivals Gateway and Dell Computer. "Gateway and Dell are just hardware companies," Nadhir said. "We're well beyond that. Our machines also use open architecture. Theirs don't. That means our customers can plug in what they want, when they want it. When a piece of one of our machines becomes obsolete, customers can upgrade it easily. Gateway and Dell solder in components, making upgrades very costly."
