Jim--
Thanks for your reply. You were correct--waste paper fiber would be a primary source of celmat (cellulosic materials) for the process--as well as yard clippings and wood waste. All of these products are biomass (see my previous note differentiating "live" and "dead" biomass). Using its "Biofuels Technology," the Company would be able to break the cellulose-lignin bond which essentially holds the fibers together, and utilize the cellulose thus obtained as a feedstock in place of the corn that is currently used. Essentially Standard would have what you achieved with potatoes, but on a much larger scale with celmat--significant savings in landfill space, and revenue streams from the sale of ethanol and from the receipt of tip fees for the recycle and disposal of the MSW. The tip fees received would result in cost-free feedstock at the ethanol plant--providing the Company a significant cost advantage over its competitors. The lignin recovered from the separation process could turn out to be another source of revenue. One company developing commercial applications for lignin is Lenox Polymers, www.lenoxpoly.com. At a minimum, lignin could be used as a cost-free boiler fuel for the ethanol manufacturing process. Ethanol manufacturers use coal-fueled boilers to produce plant electricity. Replacing up to 30% of the coal with lignin would save money and would cut pollution as lignin does not contain any sulfur or residual ash, making it clean burning.
Thanks for your input here--it is especially interesting to "talk" to someone who has had experience with ethanol production.
