I agree, they are high risk. One good one can easily make up for a few bad ones. I find the best ones through business associates. That way I am sure to get in on the ground floor. However, the best one that I have participated in, I approached the company, wanting to buy stock. I have had two that have gone public so far. However, all I use it for is a gauge to see what the market is willing to pay since they have a 144 restriction. I am in no rush to sell, I believe in the companies that I invest in. I do a lot of due diligence, mainly checking out the products and the company facilities themselves. I participate in about 4 Private Placements a year.
