LG Chem supplies the Lithium-ion batteries for GM's new Volt.
"If there is a sense that something big is about to happen in the world of batteries, it could have something to do with the high-profile successes that A123Systems has had in the past few years. Located on the outskirts of Cambridge, Massachusetts, the company has been working on redesigning the lithium-ion battery to meet the demands of high-torque applications, such as power tools and automobiles. In August, 2007, General Motors vice-chairman Bob Lutz announced that A123 would be one of the companies co-designing the lithium-ion battery for its new Chevy Volt. (This year, GM made the decision to go with a competitor, Korea’s LG Chem.) And shortly before Chrysler entered bankruptcy proceedings this April, the company announced it was tapping A123 to power its Dodge Circuit EV, as well as its Jeep Patriot EV and other extended-range electric vehicles. The same month, A123 announced it had raised an additional $69 million, almost a quarter of which had come from General Electric."
