I met with MVIS this week at the AUSA show in Washington DC and tried out their prototype products. I also met with their Marketing VP (Andrew Lee) and Marketing Manager for Aerospace and Defense (AJ Yarmie). I was very impressed with both their technology and people.

They had their color and red toned units in their booth and the display resolution was vastly superior compared to the Kopin headsets that my company currently sells as part of our Wearable computer offering. The only advise that I would give them in the future relative to their trade show display, is that there was no frame of reference to compare their display against. If they had a Kopin headset next to theirs and let their prospects look into both in succession, the prospects could have instantly recognized the supeiority of the MVIS display.

I was also impressed with their understanding of how to market successfully to the DOD. Without getting into specifics on this public board, I asked them the same questions that I ask most small companies to quiz their knowledge of how they planned to sell to the DOD and they gave all the right answers. Unlike most small companies that are trying to hype their products with no specific plans, MVIS has a good plan to capture DOD R&D contracts and then leverage this into smaller form factor products which will eventually lead them to the huge consumer markets. Their marketing people were also up front and honest about the technological challenges that they still need to conquer and they described their plan to evolve their technology. They are now in the stage that MSFT was in just before they signed their first IBM deal.

They have solid marketing and engineering, but they need to sign on a production partner to be able to mass produce a more affordable product, which will lead to explosive growth. Their prototype is a VCR sized box (optic control unit) connected by fiber to a cigarette pack sized eyepiece. This could be sold right now to hospitals and other customers that don't require mobility, but they need to repackage to have a viable offering for the mobile computing and consumer markets.
