Ephraim,
"""""Are there any anthrax plays? """"
There are several.
Nanogen, (NGEN) is leading the way in diagnosis of Anthrax and other chemical warfare exposures. Their machine based on a blood test is 100% accurate and takes minutes to complete rather than days. Other testing procedures take days and false negatives are prevalent with a few false positives. The false pos+ aren't so much of a problem as the false neg-. I am sure you have heard about the Anthrax testing that takes about three days, if you think you were exposed wouldn't you like to know in minutes rather than start a drug regime while you wait three or four days? NGEN is under contract with DOD to produce a small battlefield testing unit. Their primary larger machines are in use in laboratories now but are not yet approved for patient care. The FDA is a large bureaucratic mess that takes years for a new treatment or diagnostic procedure to be approved.
The NGEN design deposits the DNA of the suspected bacteria or agent on a biochip. The patient DNA from a blood sample is also on the chip. DNA has a natural negative charge so the test DNA is given a positive charge and the patient DNA remains neg-. When a match is made the electrical connection is indicated in just minutes. The old way that we see on TV with the swab on a petri dish works like this. The medium in the dish, red stuff, contains agents to kill bacteria strains that may be present in blood or other contaminates but allows the anthrax or other suspected agent to grow, kill everything but what you are looking for. Thus, three or four days later the petri dish is examined visually to determine the results.
NGEN is bargained priced @ 8.57
AFFX @30.04 also has similar designs but their process is less reliable and also takes days to run. They are also a tier one company and their discoveries are already priced into the stock.

Also, GILD has a drug (cidofovir)that is close to approval that is effective against small pox. Not a vaccine but a treatment that works, the small pox use was not the main focus rather a side benefit that was discovered . CDC is helping speed up approval process.
