I was drafting you some info on an interesting option spread I was working on for CMGI, and AOL blew me out. I saved most of it in IE's cache, so I will re-construct it and send it to you. However, (and a VERY BIG however) is the following information I uncovered today tracking this AOL performance problem. Understanding the problem will benefit any folks who both use AOL for it's community and as an ISP....

Geek speak: AOL users are getting their web peformance robbed because AOL sets the MTU packet size to 1500 bytes, and this makes AOL web transmission and downloads GO about 3 TIMES SLOWER than they should for the modem connection speed you get!!

Here's the details:

Windows 95/98 default has a MaxMTU of 1500. That means that packets of 1500 bytes are sent over the Internet. Most routers on the internet have a MaxMTU of 576. That means your 1500 byte packet is fragmented in 3 packets.

With this unwanted fragmentation, the speed and download performance goes WAY down because it generates a lot of useless space in the packets. If you set your MaxMTU to 576 there will be less unwanted fragmentation so speed goes up. So the suggested value for MaxMTU is 567.

Now....AOL users should get some tech support to get this fixed, unless folks are very technical themselves. You need to edit the registry, etc.

This had me inside my computer fixing this for a while. I wanted to mention it to other folks that rely on AOL.
