NOVELL: Novell Internet Caching System to serve as caching backbone for
Internet2 project

Story Filed: Thursday, April 29, 1999 7:13 AM EST

APR 29, 1999, M2 Communications - Placing itself on the forefront of Internet development, Novell
today announced the donation of ten Novell(R) Internet Caching Systems(TM) running on Compaq
caching appliance servers to the Internet2 project (I2), a joint effort of university, government and
industry partners building the next generation of the Internet. The donation by Novell, the leading
provider of directory-enabled networking software, will be made in conjunction with a donation of ten
dedicated caching appliances by Compaq, the leading provider of Web servers. With the potential to
increase the speed and capacity of I2's Web servers ten-fold, the I2 project will benefit from dramatic
improvements in Web server speed and efficiency, increased information access speeds and lowered
telecommunication costs.

The Novell Internet Caching System donation to the Internet2 project further demonstrates that Novell
solutions are increasingly becoming an integral part of Internet-based computing. Novell's Internet
Caching System recently emerged as the leader in performance and price/performance value for Web
caching based on a report released by the National Laboratory of Applied Network Research
(NLANR) following their first Web Cache Bake-Off, March 15-17, 1999.

"Novell's Internet Caching System is the highest performing cache on the market and the only one that
we believe can handle Internet2 speeds, " said Dr. Glenn Ricart, Chief Technology Officer, Novell.
"With more than five million enterprise users already relying on Novell's caching technology for
improving their Web performance, Novell has clearly established itself as the leader in the Internet
caching market. This donation helps Internet2 take Internet technology to a new level of performance."

"Compaq's caching appliance server draws on Compaq's engineering and integration expertise to
optimize the performance of Novell's ICS in a reliable, ready-to-deploy format," said John Young,
director of appliance and communications servers, Compaq Computer Corporation. "This
single-purpose server takes the guesswork out of application integration and simplifies administration,
allowing enterprises and ISPs -- such as the Internet2 Project -- to deploy eBusiness and Internet
solutions faster and with less risk."

Advancing the Internet

Just as today's Internet arose from the academic and federal research networks of the 1980s, the
Internet2 project is helping to develop and test the next generation of Internet technologies in a
pre-commercial setting. The ten donated Compaq caching server appliances running Novell Internet
Caching System will be deployed as part of I2's Distributed Storage Initiative (I2-DSI). The I2-DSI
project will allow replication of content across multiple servers, and provide users with transparent
access to that content at their chosen cost/performance point. Once integrated with the Novell Internet
Caching System and Compaq's caching server appliances, the I2 project will generate important
feedback to help Novell and Compaq refine and develop future caching technology.

"The I2 project is building leading-edge network capabilities to enable the next generation of Internet
applications," said Micah Beck, research associate professor at the Innovative Computing Laboratory,
University of Tennessee, Knoxville. "Caching will be an important part of the future of the Internet and
we are proud that Novell and Compaq share our vision."

Novell Internet Caching System

Announced at BrainShare '99, Novell's annual developer's conference, the Novell Internet Caching
System is a scalable, plug-and-accelerate caching appliance architecture available for license by Intel
architecture-based OEMs. Novell's Internet Caching System, with its new cache object store,
dramatically improves the speed and efficiency of delivering Internet content. Novell's Internet
Caching System can accelerate any Web site up to ten times the performance of common Web
servers, host over 100,000 persistent connections, and dramatically reduce the hassle and expense of
scaling traffic across multiple Web servers. Novell Internet Caching System, which can be easily
installed in any Cisco, Unix, Windows NT or NetWare network, enables content publishers, ISPs and
enterprises to deploy high-performance, content-rich Web storefronts that increase buyer satisfaction,
attract new customers and drive new revenue opportunities.

About Internet2

Internet2 is led by more than 150 U.S. research universities, working with federal research agencies
and leaders in the information technology industry to accelerate the next stage of Internet development
in academia. As a project of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development
(UCAID), Internet2 is bringing focus, energy and resources to the development of a new family of
advanced applications to meet the emerging academic requirements in research, teaching and learning.
