Digital (hd based) VCRs should improve the picture quality for recorded programs over their tape based counterparts. VHS captures ~3Mbps of video data, while the actual broadcast contains closer to 6Mbps.

This, combined with the ability to play and record at the same time, allowing a pause function for live tv, should attract some premium. However, if the devices cannot function without a monthly subscription, then it's going to be a harder sell.

I can see a need for cost recovery, if the device is dialing an 800 number to get program info. But it should be able to leverage existing internet access for the 5-20 million already on board.

Then the monthly fee becomes viable for some form of value added function beyond setting the clock, and providing a 'record ally mcbeal' function.

One example that comes to mind, is the audience selected plot shifts or endings, enabled by downloading alternative scenarios during off hours, or with cable modems, even real time.
