Another reason to not be a conservative!
Or, one could say, if one were a Darwinian, another reason TO be a conservative.
Assuming the validity of the premise, which I don't necessarily do but will accept for argument's sake, one could -- I'm not saying I do myself, but one could -- take the view that those who are committing suicide are self-selecting for their inability to succeed in a competitive society. Under this argument, during a liberal regime the non-productive members of society are cushioned from the consequences of their failures, so that they are artificially allowed to linger as drags on society, but when a conservative government enters they realize that they are unable to compete, and take the reasonable way out. Very Darwinian. Again, I don't put that forward as a personal opinion, but it is another approach to the facts. |
