Police identify officer slain by gunman in NY
Feb 19 04:39 PM US/Eastern

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) - Police have identified an officer slain by a gunman in New York's Hudson Valley as John Falcone, an 18-year veteran of the force.

Poughkeepsie police Chief Ron Knapp said Saturday that Falcone and other officers were struggling with a man who had just killed his wife when the suspect fired at least twice. One of the bullets hit Falcone in the head.

Knapp says the gunman then shot himself to death. None of the officers fired a shot.

The 44-year-old patrolman died Friday at a hospital. Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik (TYE'-zihk) called Falcone "a great man and a great officer."

Police identified the shooter as 27-year-old Lee Welch of Catskill. His wife, Jessica, was found shot dead in a car nearby.
