but history says a chimpanzee is not a good symbol when attached to the possibility of it being interpreted as symbol for an African American person, in this case, the President.

People refer to it as Obama's stimulus plan. There was a lot of outrage by some as to Obama putting forth such a large stimulus bill. Therefore many people interpreted that it was Obama depicted as the Chimp. Furthermore, the chimp was shot.

Common Sense says that it may get interpreted that way, and if I'm a cartoonist I am certainly aware that I deal in visual metaphors. In fact, I'm probably pretty savvy about it. And I probably know that there are more than one or two ways to interpret a clever cartoon. In this case, he was way too clever.

Many people found it to be racist. That is a fact.
