Close contact, not direct. Yes, there is definitely less risk of contagion with ebola.

Individuals vary in terms of what they fear. I had a good friend who was terrified of spiders. Some of it's rational some of it's not. To the extent that it is rational, different people have different criteria. Some might prefer that a nuke land on their heads so they never knew what hit them rather than suffer through a painful disease that they have a good chance of surviving. It all depends. I was interested in what criteria might cause you to rank smallpox higher than I would. I got an answer so thanks.

FWIW, I'm naturally immune to smallpox. At least I was once. I imagine that it has worn off with age.
