PC price/performance continues to improve at a breakneck pace so that machines have a useful lifespan of perhaps three years. People buy new cars even though the automobile industry is very well established. People buy new PCs for much the same reason--they're a necessity that have a useful lifespan and then need to be replaced. The XP delta is based on lowered industry costs and increased consumer appeal. If XP causes the average consumer to accelerate a PC replacement by even a few months over the replacement cycle they'd otherwise follow then it will jumpstart the entire PC industry.
