Paul Demone of Real World Tech comments on Intel saying SPEC scores for Itanium are "not important"

>>ROTFLMAO!
Not important for their 64 bit workstation/server chip? They
give SPEC numbers for their mainstream PC chips! I guess
their IA-64 compilers are still in pretty rough shape and
they will focus on hand coded program snippets to do their
benchmarketing..

I find the fact that Intel is downplaying SPEC for Merced in
favour of hand tweaked crypto benchmarks quite enlightening.
That tells me the compilers are still in rough shape and
perhaps Merced's modest on-chip cache resources aren't robust enough for SPEC2000.
Everyday Merced and IA-64 smells a little more like the i860 fiasco. Intel blew its own horn big time for that uberchip ten years ago only to be let down by compilers and the emptiness of their own rhetoric. Intel killed Oki's hope for the workstation market with i860. I wonder who they will bring down this time. SGI is my first pick for the IA-64 dead pool.
