Worst 2-month starts ever for Dow, S&P

Late selling pushes the market to its sixth straight monthly loss. GE is trimming its quarterly dividend to 10 cents. The government could own up to 36% of Citigroup. The economy shrank more than expected in the fourth quarter. Dell shares rise, despite lower profit.

Stocks slumped Friday with the Dow Jones industrials and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index suffering their worst two-month starts on record.

The weak finish sets the market up for a big and potentially rocky week ahead.

The Dow is off 19.5% for the year, exceeding the 14.5% loss in the first two months of 1933. The S&P is off 18.6%, its worst two-month start since 1933.

The Dow finished the day down 119 points, or 1.7%, to 7,063, its lowest close since May 1997.
