Why are people still signing up? The army conducted a large scale survey of new recruits in 2002, and found that 91 percent of the new recruits (before they entered basic training) said they joined because "they wanted to do something I can be proud of."

That survey is not relevant at all.

History shows that enlistments are always high the first two years of a war and drop dramatically the third year.

A more accurate report is the the 2004 monthly report that states enlistment and reenlistment quotas and fulfillment numbers.

We just jacked up enlistment and reenlistment bonuses big time. We didn't do that because we have a waiting list of recruits.
