The US Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. That means Jews, Christians, Muslims, and atheists all get to believe as they choose.

The US Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and of the press. That means all of the above get to speak and write as they choose. And there is nothing in the Constitution that limits the times when they may do so.

And it appears to me that a major religious holiday is a highly appropriate time to discuss religious issues- -such as whether Exodus has any historical basis.

And the Constitution does not guarantee believers the right not to be offended in their beliefs. There is no requirement that they read articles that offend them. It is clear, then, that the real basis of their feelings is fear that an article like that may open someone's eyes. That right of the author of that article to write it and of the newspaper to publish it cannot be abrogated for that reason.

Let me raise the other side of that issue: Newspapers commonly have entire sections devoted to religion either all year or at major religious holidays. Failing that, they commonly have many articles devoted to religion. Should they not be prohibited from doing so because nonbelievers may take offense?

And how often have you heard nonbelievers express offense at that?
