Pakistan could have gone either way , i believe Bush pushed them.

Bush had Powell call up Musharraf and give him a "come to Jesus" speech. His Intel service was in bed with the Militants. After they tried to kill him, Musharraf saw the light. I think Pakistan is now close the "Egypt" model of extremist suppression.
