If you go the TR-30 meeting in Florida, you will hear people talk about those story during their dinner.

This story is plausible because those French engineers published their papers first in 1994 to 1995 time frame then they showed up in Newport Beach ROckwell office to do a presentation.
ROckwell was too busying buying Brooktree at the time after Brooktree purchased Base 2 technology in Denver Colorado (which is a T1/E1 framer chip company). The PCM modem idea is very simple and straightforward.
Nobody has any doubts after ADSL proves the bandwidth of analog loop. All the probelms are in the line card and artificial bandwidth(4khz) that was imposed by phone companies. Once you can use one digital link(the server modem) and one local analog loop (the client modem), then the sky is wide open:
It is almost as easy doing a line driver--except you have to take care of some problems that is easily solved with today's DSP IC chip. It is much simpler try to use Trelis code to squeeze 3dB.

This also brings another modem technology that Lucent claims to have: Full duplex 56K, the flex2 technology. AT&T(LUcent) obtained the patents in 1992. Lucnt claims, without changing the analog local loop, they will be able to send 56kbps both downstream as well upstream.

There is no standards for protocol yet. But it is a simple matter to upgrade the protocol. The key is algorithm to squeeze in bits and resolve it.
