-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 1998--Com21 Inc. (NASDAQ:CMTO) announced today that it has begun trials of a system developed in coordination with On Command Corp. to deliver high-speed laptop Internet access to hotel rooms utilizing the existing internal cable TV system. Using the Com21 ComUNITY Access cable modem system, hotel guests are able to surf the web at Megabit speeds. This new service complements On Command's trials of high-speed, TV-based Internet access as well as its traditional on-demand movie service.
The first trial began this past March at a full-service business hotel in the San Francisco Bay Area served by On Command and targets business travelers interested in high-speed Internet access. The system provides an in-room, high-speed Internet access port that is easily connected to the guest's laptop PC. Accessing the Com21 system is accomplished via On Command's in-room TV menu screens. Security is assured with room-to-room data privacy.
"The Com21 cable modem solution eliminates the excess data traffic on the hotel's PBX system and provides hotel guests with a valuable productivity tool," said Pete Fenner, president of Com21. He added, "Based upon Com21's scaleable Community Access cable modem system, this solution is suited for hotels of all sizes. We are excited about the opportunity to work with On Command, the leader in delivering advanced Internet services to the hotel industry."
If high-speed laptop connectivity proves successful as a product, On Command expects to introduce the new service to other major hotels. "We see high-speed Internet access as a very attractive addition to our collection of in-room entertainment and information services," said Richard Fenwick, Senior Vice President of Engineering and R&D for On Command.
Com21 has successfully deployed its cable modem systems in different cable plants, including those providing general residential cable television (CATV) service, plants serving multiple-dwelling units (MDU) cable systems, and, now, intrahotel cable systems. Com21 has shipped over 200 Community Access cable modem systems to more than 30 countries to provide high-speed Internet service in cable systems passing more than 4.5 million households.
