mr and all, got too many winsocks? Here's an exchange from a user group...

I've been having some trouble with occasional IPFs when quitting OE5. I saw
a knowledge base article or two that suggested that restoring wsock32.dll
from the 98 CD might solve the problem. So, I did a quick search of my C:
drive and I found SEVEN instances of wsock32.dll. They are in these
directories:

c:c:\windows
c:\windows\system
c:\windows\ws2bakup
c:\program files\Internet Explorer
c:\program files\netscape\programs
c:\program files\netmedic\met.medic\config

Do I really need all these Winsocks? Which one does my system really use?
If I restore wsock32.dll from the 98 CD, which one gets replaced? I'm using
98 upgrade with the service pack.

BTW, the IPF error message is:

MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0177:bff7b997.

The only one on my system is in c:\windows\system. It's likely that the others were backups of the previous version created when you installed new programs, there are a number of them that install their own winsock files. I would try replacing the one in windows\system first. You could also try renaming the others to a .old extension and see what happens.
