Obama goes south to find new jobs

PRESIDENT Barack Obama has emphasised the importance of trade links with Latin America, heading to Brazil.

In his weekly address, Mr Obama first pledged his support to Japan and "innocent civilians in Libya" before adding, "As we respond to these immediate crises abroad, we also will not let up in our efforts to tackle the pressing, ongoing challenges facing our country, including accelerating economic growth."

He then laid out the case for greater trade links with Latin America, noting that US exports to Brazil supported more than 250,000 American jobs in 2010.

"We now export more than three times as much to Latin America as we do to China, and our exports to the region will soon support more than two million jobs here in the United States," he said.

The President's comments came as he arrived in Brasilia, the first stop of a five-day trade relations trip to Brazil, Chile and El Salvador.
