NanoPierce Card Technologies GmbH Receives Order From Polish Telecom and
Expects Further Cooperation Agreements

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

HOHENBRUNN/MUNICH, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2000--
NanoPierce Card Technologies GmbH, a subsidiary of NanoPierce
Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:NPCT & NPI:Frankfurt Stock Exchange &
Hamburg Stock Exchange), has received an order to develop software for
coding chip cards from OTO Lublin, a central business division of the
Polish Telecommunications Service (TP S.A.).
Thanks to the recent expansion of the software development
capacity at NanoPierce Card Technologies GmbH, the company was able to
accept this lucrative software development order from TP S.A.
Scheduled to last approximately 6 months, the project involves the
first phase of a software expansion for the existing automatic
personalization systems at OTO Lublin. The aim of this expansion is to
provide greater flexibility and to enable new applications for coding
chip cards. This order marks the start of NanoPierce's cooperation
with the most important chip card manufacturer in Poland. As a future
member of the European Union (EU), Poland, with over 40 million
potential smart card users, is poised to assume a leading position
within the large and rapidly growing Eastern European market for chip
cards.
"This project gives us the opportunity to extend our activities in
the field of smart card/smart label initialization and
personalization. In addition, it represents a solid, long-term basis
for future business successes," explained Dr. Michael E. Wernle,
President & CEO of NanoPierce Card Technologies GmbH.
"Our ultimate goal, of course, is to integrate our NCS (NanoPierce
Connection System) technology into production processes for smart
cards and smart labels. To achieve that goal, we intend at the same
time to provide our customers with development assistance, support and
service surrounding the actual production of these electronic
components."
This latest revenue-generating contract with OTO Lublin follows on
the heels of NanoPierce's acquisition of an order from 3S-PHOENIX,
Inc. (refer to press release June 30, 2000). While initially these
activities may appear to have little to do with electrical contacting
technologies such as NCS, they are essential to its adoption in the
production chain. A look at the production chain for smart cards/smart
labels reveals that the peripheral production steps, including
initialization, personalization, and optimum software control of the
all important die-bonders used (e.g. software order from 3S-PHOENIX,
cooperation agreement with Simotec GmbH (refer to press release
June 8, 2000), are absolute prerequisites for cost-effective
production. These software development orders and cooperation
agreements significantly strengthen the position of NanoPierce in this
market, especially considering the extensive experience of its
employees, particularly Mr. Kuehn and Mr. Berger. While developing
synergies with its partners and customers, NanoPierce can create the
preconditions in-house to promote early adoption of its technology by
manufacturers, which is designed to achieve the most efficient
possible production of smart cards/smart labels.
Telekomunikacja Polska S.A. (www.tpsa.pl) is the third largest
enterprise in Poland. Through its cooperation with international
telecom organizations, TP S.A. has gained access to state-of-the-art
telecommunications technology and is continually involved in
co-creating innovative solutions. The TP S.A. structure includes seven
central units, including the Optical Telecommunications Centre
(OTO Lublin) with nationwide coverage.
TP S.A. OTO Lublin was initially established in 1983 as an R&D
center for optical fiber technologies. In 1993, the first optical
fiber cable production facility in Poland was opened in OTO Lublin.
The chip card production plant in TP S.A. OTO Lublin began operation
in 1997, making it the most experienced chip card production plant in
Poland today. TP S.A. OTO Lublin currently specializes in chip card
production and chip card coding using modern production equipment with
a capacity of over 20 million cards per year.
NanoPierce Card Technologies GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of
