My understanding was that the 'bear' had deducted the 'options expense' and 'pension income' from projected earnings.

Of course, we know that projected earnings and future interest rates may vary, so it may be hard to draw any hard and fast conclusions from the exercise. And individual names (ala F) may vary substantially from the 'index'.
