We believe the overall capital spending outlook for telecommunication equipment in 1999 is relatively grim.

The author of this article discloses his bias with this statement. Current business forecasts call for IT spending to increase only 1% in the enterprise sector and 16% in the carrier sector. My source is Business Week Magazine. The slowdown in spending in the enterprise sector hurts Cisco the most, Not LU or NT.

This article was written in January before Nortel's announcement of its Succession Platform. The article states that Nortel needs another product in the carrier space. The author was apparently ignorant of the new DMS 250 carrier switch.
