Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Selling Exceptionally Well ???

The blurb below turned up in a Google search late yesterday (April 2) ...

>> CTIA: 13 million Nokia 5800s sold

Mobile Entertainment

Rob Taylor, director of Forum Nokia North America, disclosed the new sales figure at a briefing during CTIA today. The Nokia 5800 was launched in Russia, ... ###

BUT ...

... the link produces a blank page, and a search of the Mobile Entertainment site does not yield any comporable result. Moreover, no other source affirms this.

April Fools joke? An incorrect statement? Nokia clamped down on it? Shipments plus backlog?

Hard to say.

On the January earnings CC Nokia claimed that 1 million units had been sold to date since the limited launch that commenced in late November in Russia. We subsequently learned that the original units had a defective component and Nokia had to change suppliers for it, delaying the ramp.

The 5800 was intended to be a mass-market midrange Symbian/S60 smartphone. If 12 million units actually shipped since mid-January, it certainly is a mass market device, but the number seems incredibly high, and a bit hard to swallow. If they shipped even half that amount in Q1 it would be a grand slam home run.

Cheers,
