Jim - Re:" Could you please give us your current assessment of this company and its stock? (Altera)"

Thanks for the inquiry. My "attendance" on the Altera forum has been lacking of late - sorry.

On the flip side, I think Altera's prospects are looking brighter than ever. Although I still believe they have an inventory overhang (their own and their customers'), they are pursuing the one sure recovery path - new product development and introduction. They are rapidly going to 0.35 micron proceses and this will help enormously

After they announced the agressive price cuts on their FLEX100K and upcoming 100KA products, their stock dipped into the high 50's.

I bought more at that point.

It takes time to design these new products in, so my guess is that mid to late 1997, Altera will be deriving really good revenue from these new products. Their software pact with Synopsys will assist this - and their customers, making VHDL design, simulation & verification easier to do on these very large gate count devices.

Then in late 1998 or early 1999 TSMC should be online with their new fab up in Oregon. If that kicks in on schedule, Altera will have additional sources for advanced (0.35 micron and BELOW) processes. This will permit them to design faster versions of existing parts, and larger CPLD devices that can be economically manufactured.

Hope that summarizes my position on Altera.

By the way, I was reading recent posts on the Altera forum and some guy named Ken Muller (??) was shorting Altera when it was in the 50s. How is he doing now?

Paul
