The party was only a minority in Germany. (I mean in terms of membership, not in the government, but it never actually won a majority in an election either. Hitler was appointed as chancellor, not elected, and his party while the largest in the Reichstag, never won a majority (at least not before other parties stated to be banned). In terms of identifying with the "folks in power" maybe your right, certainly Hitler did get support. Figuring out exactly how popular a dictator is or was can be hard, but he wasn't an unpopular figure overall.

In any case I disagree about being an involuntary member of the Hitler Youth being enough to call someone a Nazi.
