Foreign Spending Gives Area Boost
Study Says $17 Billion Comes Annually From Businesses, Embassies, Others

...The Washington area's $186 billion economy is bolstered by more than $17 billion a year in spending by foreign businesses, embassies, students and tourists, the Greater Washington Board of Trade said in a study released yesterday.
...The direct benefits to the region cited in the study include $1.3 billion in salaries for an estimated 50,000 workers at 700 foreign-owned firms and affiliates in the area, such as Lafarge Corp., a French-owned construction firm in Reston, and Corel Corp., a Canadian-based software firm in the District.
