As of last week, they were dissappointed in the service and were now installing a prototype of the new system(by Nokia) where portable phones become cells phones once, the unit leaves the building. May be a factor. Nextel is not going to get to five million units on contractors alone.>>

Converting from DC back to basic digital cellular only sounds like a move backward. I will check my sources at MS to see myself.

From portable to cellphones does not sound like to much of a trick. Simple wireless LANs with a converter switch or intelligent antenna is all that's required. I'm sure Nokia is building this infrastructure equipment for more than just their own phones.

That Nokia is building it this does not surprise me. I own the stock and have been very impressed with their vision and ability to deliver. Entering Nextel's space would be a great move on their part. Nokia has a great infrastructure business. They tend to move into areas where they can dominate over the long term.

A more flexible billing system - which unbundles the numbers and makes them accessible in file/data format - is critical to enabling more subnetwork service providers to sign up with Nextel by assuming the billing responsibility and detail. Nextel cannot expect to handshake their services to everyone through their fixed consolidated billing system - its too old, inflexible and in need of complete revamping. I understand they are working on correcting this, but I haven't seen any timetables.

Passing off the billing responsibility to resellers would open up a whole new world of growth to Nextel. That's what made WorldCom and others into great businesses. They found a value-added way to get between a basic commodity - long distance service - and end retail users. When resellers start buying bandwidth on Nextel's nationwide all-digital network, we will know we have arrived in the promised land.

Dan A. - are your getting this message??

Hang in there Al. I'd be glad to chair any board until all the dogs come wandering home. Sounds like you got your nose glued to the ground these days.
