Sun Launches Activator Software

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sun Microsystems is rolling out software
called "Activator" that it says will compensate for any incompatibilities
between Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser and programs
written in the "official" Java language. According to a report in today's
Wall Street Journal, Activator will circumvent Microsoft's version of
Java, thwarting what Sun claims are Microsoft's attempts to limit the
spread of Sun's universal programming language.

Java-based programs, which can be delivered in the World Wide
Web, are supposed to run on virtually any type of computer,
overcoming problems of machines and software that do not work
with each other, the newspaper noted.

However, in October, Sun sued Microsoft, alleging that the
Redmond, Wash., company is trying to disrupt the development of
Java by failing to keep its implementations of Java compatible with
Sun's specifications.
