IBM's strategy with Linux according to Merrill

• LinuxWorld is set to kick off this morning in San Francisco. We believe that IBM will
be announcing a customer win with Linux on the mainframe.
• We believe that IBM’s Linux strategy is designed to create an even playing field in the
hardware market and software developers. In particular, we believe that IBM hopes to
capture developers, commoditize the server OS, challenge Sun and Microsoft, and shift
server margins from the OS to semiconductors, middleware, and services.

• We believe transforming this strategy into reality will be a multi-year process and Linux
is still immature. Momentum and IBM’s leadership remain key keeping Linux on track.
