10/18 08:05 Novartis <NOVZn.S> working on potency pill - paper

ZURICH, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Swiss pharmaceuticals and nutrition group
Novartis AG has begun a high priority research and development programme
aimed at producing an anti-impotency drug to compete with Pfizer's <PFE.N>
Viagra, a Swiss newspaper reported on Sunday.

A Novartis spokeswoman declined comment on the report. "We don't
comment on projects in pre-clinical phases," she said.

But according to the report in the Sonntags Zeitung, the Novartis programme is
aimed at producing a cheaper medication with fewer undesirable side effects.

The newspaper said Paul Herrling, head of reseach at Novartis, confirmed that
the company had plans in this area. But it said he declined to give details, saying
such projects were still at a very early stage.

According to the Novartis spokeswoman, Herrling had only confirmed that
Novartis was working on projects in the so-called "lifestyle" or "wellness" areas.
Lifestyle drugs are designed to improve patients' quality of life. The
spokeswoman said Herrling made no reference to Viagra or to anti-impotency
drug projects.

But the report said the company decided on the project in early July during a
Portfolio Review Workshop led by Herrling.

It also quoted "reliable sources" as saying that Novartis planned to bring
together 21 researchers from seven different laboratories to work on the
project full time.
