Luxury market surges to euro172 billion in 2010

(AP:MILAN) A new study shows that the global luxury goods market rebounded more strongly than expected in 2010 thanks to generous holiday shoppers.

A study by Bain & Company for an association of Italian luxury producers says the market was worth euro172 billion ($254 billion) in 2010 _ surpassing pre-crisis levels. That's a 12 percent increase from 2009's disastrous euro153 billion _ and higher than the euro168 billion mark Bain had forecast in October.

Bain partner and luxury goods expert Claudia D'Arpizio said better-than-expected holiday shopping made the difference.

Bain presented the figures Tuesday at a conference in Milan sponsored by Italy's Fondazione Altagamma association of luxury producers.
