Gary:

Great analysis.

The wild card with @Home, as I see it, is the rate at which cable systems can upgrade to fibre optic. About 6 weeks ago I called TCI in Seattle to find out when service would be available in my area (downtown). They told me 2-6 months. They added that in Seattle (and in all other major metropolitan areas)service would start first in the suburbs and then move to more densely populated areas. Downtown Seattle, they said, would be the last to receive fibre optic upgrades. Two weeks later an article appeared in Sunday Seattle Times describing the service in glowing terms and featuring a young couple who had gone out of their way to rent in an area (West Seattle) that had @Home cable access. Some days later I noticed orange parrallel lines spray-painted on the asphalt running the length of a block in Lower Queen Anne (downtown) with "Fibre Optic" sprayed along side. I have been looking around for more markings but have found none so far.

Demand for @Home's service is clearly there but the cables with fibre optic-enhanced areas are still few in number. Since the already debt-laden cable companies themselves are paying for the upgrades it is unclear to me how long these upgrades will take. For this reason, I wonder about the 2001 7 million subscriber figure. I am sure that if all fibre optic upgrades were in place, the 7 million subscribers would jump on board in a year or two. If, however, they proceed at a more sluggish pace...

Thanks again for starting the discussion.
