Nice post John. I went to a presentation for a startup recently that was building an exchange to offer plans from different carriers on eSIM-enabled devices. My biggest objection was that the telecoms would fight a commoditization of their business tooth and nail - this would mean serious rate-cutting. But I didn't factor in that the deal might work out well for the device makers. If that is true, the business model may hold water. And the debt-laden telecoms may be even more screwed than they were already.

I think that in the 21st century telecoms will basically replay what happened to the railroads in the 20th. Even the strongest business moats rarely last forever, and no management likes admitting it's time to starting delevering and rolling back the business.
