is simply not true.

RTOS's are OS's in every sense of the definition. I've been in the business for close to 12 years now. The embedded systems I'm currently involved sport RTOS's which deal with multiple applications, all competing for the same resources.

Your point about how some systems don't require RTOS's are valid. Some don't need any. Some can get by with a simple roll-yer-own. Some don't really need "realtime". The embedded market is quite splintered in this fashion.
