Don’t get me wrong - I am highly interested in investing in China. I think there is a better than 50% probability that the courts/ government will try to promote rather than discourage foreign investment over the next 10 years, although there will be some scares along the way as is currently the case. And some of these VIE companies will ultimately be found out of compliance you can be sure.

If you look back to the late 90s/ early 00s there were lots of American companies playing shady accounting games or fabricating revenues. But then there were some legitimate technology companies growing at very high rates. I think China’s position is similar today. Companies are going public in China much earlier in their growth cycle than they now do in the US, which presents opportunity for retail investors.

So I’ve been picking through these on a case by case basis, trying to discern what is real and what isn’t. If we manage to find something growing at a sustainable 30-50% with 10-100M in revenue then there’s multibagger potential, similar to NTES. That is another one I am still trying to figure out.
