Compaq To Add To AlphaServer, Himalaya Lines (05/10/99, 3:44 p.m. ET) By Martin J. Garvey, InformationWeek
Compaq this week will introduce newsystems to the AlphaServer and Himalayalines it acquired from Digital Equipment and Tandem Computer.
Based on a 466-MHz CPU, the AlphaServer DS10 will debut as Compaq's fastest single-processor Alpha system. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the NonStop Himalaya S72000 will support up to 255 200-MHz R10000 MIPS CPUs. Houston-based Compaq said the S72000 can process as many as 50 million transactions in a day.
The DS10 can run Linux, Windows NT, or Compaq's Tru64 Unix or OpenVMS operating systems. Priced starting at $3,500, the DS10 includes up to 2 gigabytes of memory, 2 megabytes of Level 2 cache, and advanced switching to provide a 1.3-GB-per-second memory bandwidth. Due in June, the DS10 can be rack-mounted for easier management, and is designed for running isolated, single-threaded applications, such as e-mail.
The S72000 is appropriate for "customers [who are] doing business over the Internet and need a 'can't-lose-anything' server," said Rich Partridge, a senior analyst with D.H. Brown Associates.
The S72000, which ships next week, starts at $150,000, but Partridge said its built-in high availability makes it a more cost-effective choice for e-commerce than purchasing pairs of lower-cost systems to gain redundancy. Compaq said the S72000 is 30 percent faster than existing Himalaya systems. |
