Yes, I know. Including social security surpluses is dishonest, since those surpluses go into the trust fund to fund future SS needs.

Here are the actual national debt numbers from the Treasury web site. It's easy to see what the government borrowed each year to cover the deficit of that year. I think we can agree that the increase in the public debt in a particular year is substantially equal to the honest deficit for that year.

Reagan run consistent deficits of $200+ billion a year and they got worse during his second term, when we were supposedly enjoying the fruits of the Reagan revolution.

Clinton did not achieve a true surplus (not including SS). He came close in his last fiscal year, but was still off by a relatively paltry $18 billion.
