Remember Maxtor's agreement with ampex? Is it still in effect?
Just guessing, but I wonder, (hope)is this is related in some way.

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Merrill Lynch & Co. upgraded its investment opinion on disk drive
maker Maxtor Corp. (MXTR) to near-term buy from near-term accumulate.

The firm's long-term rating remains accumulate, according to a research note.

Merrill increased its price target on Maxtor to $16 from $15.50. "The shares are trading at a steep
discount to our new price objective," the note reads.

The firm said Maxtor is making the transition to the next-generation giant magneto resistive heads,
known as GMR, which "increases confidence" in its 1999 outlook for the company.
