Kerry had a reserve commission to begin with. With a reserve commission one does a few years on active duty then owes an equal time in the reserves afterwards. The normal committment after OCS, which is exactly what I did, was 4 years on active duty then 4 years in the Reserves and you're done. Kerry did 3 on active duty, then disappeared and met with the enemy.
