Deposits are liabilities. Loans, property, investments are the banks' assets. They can screw up the assets or make good, diversified, predictable returns, but they always owe the liabilities. Banks do not keep the deposits; they invest them, mostly in mortgages, loans, and paper.

It's a myth propagated by the media that deposits are assets.
